Amidst the Storm by gfball84887 Amidst the Storm by gfball84887
Commission piece.

My first gameboy pixel painting. It is of link in the storm that sends him to the island before the actual game begins.

-20x20

-Pixels are about a 6th of and inch and thus my smallest pixel size ever used. I could have used a 16x20 but I like the bars at the top and bottom for effect. Not including the bars there are 16,500 pixels.

-About 35 hours. It took surprisingly long.

It's fantastic work. I've been attempting to do this and it's so difficult concentrating on all the squares, getting the count right and just painting them neatly.

Can I ask, what is your process? Do you draw a grid on the canvas first then fill in the squares? That is the way I've been doing it thus far.

Surprise, surprise! The "Letterbox" effect is very nice! I found it to be very effective in my Gun-Nac painting.

I don't really get what you've done here that took so much time
... care to explain? :(

Its a painting. I had the grid the canvas out and mark each spot for each color. I then had to paint over the grid with at least two coats of paint. A great deal of which was done with a 1/6th or so inch brush.

by far my most favorite from you! how do you get the pixels to be that small and still come out relatively sharp?

Absolutely incredible! Love it.
I've been working on a GB colour version painting of this screen for a while now, but now that I see you original GB version I think it fits so much better.

I found that a lot of games were better off monochromatic as opposed to adding color later. Still I'd like to see yours when it comes out. Will that be the biggest painting you've ever done?

I can see what you mean, now. The monochrome really makes for a good effect; I would've thought it to be bland, but it's not in the slightest, it's rather classy and has even more of a nostalgia factor to it.

Yep, mine's definitely the biggest pixel painting I've ever done (though I've done some slightly bigger "normal" paintings in school). It's 50cm by 60cm, with each pixel being 5mm by 5mm. It's also, to be perfectly honest, quite old already; I started it almost 2 years ago and still haven't finished it because other things (and paintings) kept getting in the way, I made mistakes, didn't like it anymore etc. etc... I haven't worked on it for months now, even though there's basically only the rope left to do, and some cleaning up. Well, I guess now I have the motivation again, I only need to find the time. I'll definitely post it on here when it's done. Thanks for the inspiration. ^^

Love it!!! Great shot for pixel art. I always loved that opening scene. Can't imagine the detail involved in painting this.

Absolutely! I meant the time and technique in blocking out the pixels. Pretty labor intensive, it seems.
